Palacio da Pena (Pena Palace)-Sintra (Photo Op)
palace, museum, view, history, photoop, Sintra
Pena Palace is arguably the most photographed and most visited of all of Portugal’s attractions. Its fairytale appearance has made it the hallmark of Portuguese travel posters for decades. The palace was built by King Ferdinand and was started in 1838. It took about 15 years to complete. To label it as a fairytale palace is an apt description. The palace has a variety of stylistic elements and is painted in a bright mosaic of contrasting colors. The grounds that surround the palace are worth a trip in and of themselves. The palace is on top of a mountain and it is a steep walk from Sintra. There is a bus that runs regularly from the center of Sintra. It is worth considering getting off the bus at the entrance to the gardens, which is below the palace, and walk through the gardens and then uphill to the palace. Pena is open every day with the exception of major holidays. Opens at 945 AM (0945) and closes at 7 PM (1900).
