The "Great Fire of 1889" was the reset button for Pioneer Square was the commercial downtown of a booming Seattle more than a 100 years ago. The devastating "Great Fire of 1889" called for a restart of Seattle. A replacement Seattle had to be built quickly, and these conditions attracted investors and developers who pursued the bragging rights for owning the tallest building in Seattle. In this tour, we follow the contest from the first tall building at four stories to the winner that was a building so tall that it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi for 50 years. This tour begins at 101 Yesler Way across from Pioneer Park. It can be easily accessed from Pier 55 by riding the southbound #99 bus to 101 Yesler Way. The tour is 6 blocks of level and slight grade walking.
