Coeur d’ Alene Building/The Milner
Spokane Heritage Walk, Coeur d' Alene Building, The Milner, Jake "Dutch" Foetz, Harry Bauer, sponsor
The Coeur d’ Alene Hotel/ The Milner is one of the oldest and best known structures in Spokane. Architectural style of the building is renaissance revival.
In 1909, self-made mining man “Dutch,” Jake Goetz, and his partner Harry Bauer, converted the building from a variety theater into a hotel. At the gala opening of the hotel, more than 20,000 people passed through its doors, stopping to admire the huge mural on the bar wall. It depicted the burro making its famous kick that legend says uncovered the wealth of the Coeur d’Alene mining region.
The ground floor is now occupied by O’Doherty’s Irish Grille, as well as Boo Radley’s toy store.
