Moinho de Armacao Tipo Americano (Framed Windmill - American Typ by dshay

The Framed Windmill - American Type is one of only two windmills of its’ type remaining in Portugal. Its’ preservation is intended to show the importance of the use of milling systems for the processing of agricultural products such as wheat, maize and barley, dating back to very ancient times. In the 11th century, there were already references to the existence of windmills in Cascais but it was not until the 19th century that the American type of windmill appeared in Portugal. This windmill is functions as a living museum by providing educational programs on the use of windmills over time. If you want to find out how to make bread in the old-fashioned way you can attend a bread making class at this windmill. The windmill can be visited between 1000-1300 and 1400-1600 Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Forte de Sao Jorge de Oitavos (Sao Jorge de Oitavos Fort) by dshay

The Forte was constructed between 1642 and 1648 as part of the defense fortifications built to protect entrance to the Tagus River. The forte housed a small garrison of 21 soldiers for several years. In 1999 it became the property of the Municipality of Cascais and the Municipality turned it into a museum. The museum contains many unique pieces related to military history and it provides information on the development and construction of military installations in Portugal. Admission is free and it is open from 1000-1700 except Monday’s and public holidays. The Forte a short distance up the coast from Cascais. If you are considering using one of the free bikes available in Cascais it is only a short ride to the Forte.

The biggest wave ever surfed in the world was in Nazare. This year the best surfers in the world will be visiting Nazare to see if they can catch a giant wave and set a new record. Even if you aren't lucky enough to see extreme surfing Nazare is still a wonderful destination, offering some of the best fish restaurants in Portugal.

The sculpture was placed on the street Constitution and was donated by his grandson, Jose Antonio Meade Kuri Brena, then Secretary of Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of President Enrique Pena Nieto.
