Forte de Sao Jorge de Oitavos (Sao Jorge de Oitavos Fort)

The Forte was constructed between 1642 and 1648 as part of the defense fortifications built to protect entrance to the Tagus River. The forte housed a small garrison of 21 soldiers for several years. In 1999 it became the property of the Municipality of Cascais and the Municipality turned it into a museum. The museum contains many unique pieces related to military history and it provides information on the development and construction of military installations in Portugal. Admission is free and it is open from 1000-1700 except Monday’s and public holidays. The Forte a short distance up the coast from Cascais. If you are considering using one of the free bikes available in Cascais it is only a short ride to the Forte.
