PhotoOp, historical monument, Lisbon. Belem, Free, Lisboa
The Tower of Belem was built in 1515 as a fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon harbor.
It is from this location that many of Portugal’s expeditionary voyages were launched during the Age of Discovery. It has become one of the most iconic monuments in Portugal. If you are into architecture the Tower of Belem is an excellent example of all of the details of the Manueline style.
You can walk to the top of the tower and admission is free. The Tower can be accessed by walking along the river from the Discover’s Monument or by taking Tram 15.
