Smith Tower
Opening July 4, 1914, Smith Tower was the tallest building in the world outside New York City. It was the tallest building in Seattle for more than 50 years.
Built by Cornelius Smith of the typewrite fortune – Smith and Corona- and the gun fortune – Smith and Wesson – the tower was designed to be reminiscient of the bell tower in the Piazza San Marco in Venice. The elevators are run by uniformed operators to this day, and the 522 foot tower is toped by a ball made of cut glass and copper that lights up at night.
