509-935-8595 The name of the town comes from a Kalispel word,for "watersnake" or "gartersnake". Chewelah was home to a band of the Kalispel people. In 1873 Thomas and Mary Brown founded the town of Chewelah and incorporated in 1903. In 1883 silver and lead deposits were discovered. Chewelah’s mines kept producing well into the 1950s. Today in the town, the turn of the century brick buildings house an array of modern day shops and businesses. The area is loaded with organized sports for the young and old alike. A 27 hole championship golf course, driving range, club house that is enjoyed by all. The recreational choices are endless, including a 50 mile bicycle tour, fun runs, tennis, antique car shows, fairs, rodeos and the annual Chataqua festival. Nearby is Lake Roosevelt, with hundreds of miles of shoreline, easy access, sandy beaches and secluded coves.
