Museum, architecture, Cascais, photoOp, free
The Castro Guimaraes Museum, located in the southeast corner of Parque Marechal Carmona and just across the street from the Cascais Marina, is worth a visit just to see the building. It is arguably one of the most beautiful buildings in Cascais. The building was originally constructed in 1900 by a wealthy Irish tobacco trader. The property was sold in 1912 to Castro de Guimaraes, a successful banker. Guimaraes decorated the home with the finest art and furnishings available at the time. The home contains many 17th century paintings, a display of fine china and a library with over 25,000 books. In 1930 the home was given to the town of Cascais to be used as a museum in 1930. Admission is free. The museum is open from 10 AM (1000) to 5 PM (1700). It is closed on Monday’s. Viewing the museum from the ocean side of the building provides one of the best photo opportunities in Cascais.
