Costa da Caparica is both a town and an exceptionally long stretch of sandy beach. In fact, at 30 km Costa da Caparica is the longest stretch of uninterrupted sandy beach in Europe. Costa da Caparica lies just southwest of Lisbon. You can take a ferry from Cais de Sodre and then hop a bus to get to the beach area or you can take a bus directly from Praca da Espanha in Lisbon. The northern part of the beach is home to several water sports centers and it is the most crowded Costa da Caparica beach area in the summer. From the northern end of the beach there is a narrow gauge, open air train that runs south for several miles and stops at every beach access point. Bar/cafe facilities are available at every beach stop and all bars/cafes have lounge chairs and umbrellas available for rental. Praia Sereia and Praia Moreno are two of the best options because of their excellent facilities and relatively modest crowds.
