National Pantheon of Santa Engracia – (Photo Op)

Construction was started on this church in the late 17th century but was halted when the chief architect died. Work was not actually completed until 1966. In 1916 the church was converted to the National Pantheon. Pantheon is a Latin term loosely interpreted to mean, “Sacred Destination”. Many famous Portuguese are buried here and plaques have been erected to memorialize many notables from the Age of Discovery. The building was feature an interior that is interior is covered in beautiful, multicolored slabs of polished marble. It is crowned with a dome that provides a 360-degree view of the river and the city. The Pantheon can be easily accessed via Tram 28 to Campo de Santa Clara. Open from 10 AM (1000) to 5 PM (1700). Closed Monday's.
