Chamber of Commerce Building (Civic Bldg)/Philanthropy Center
Spokane Chamber of Commerce building, Spokane Civic building, Erik Johnston, Empire Health Foundation, sponsor
In 1897 the newly formed Spokane Chamber of Commerce occupied a free office in City Hall and then a variety of spaces in other buildings in the city for the next 30 years. Under president Erik Johnston (best known as the head of the Motion Picture Assn. of America 1946-1963) a new office was built at 1020 Riverside Avenue.
The building design includes distinctive Italianate columns. The interior has an open design. A large skylight – painted over during World War II – was restored, providing natural light for the main level. The ballroom is in a daylight basement that faces Main Avenue, with two banks of windows.
Empire Health Foundation now owns and has renovated the building. It has been renamed the Philanthropy Center.
