King Street Station
terminal,train,rail,seattle
Once among the finest train stations on the continent, this landmark station was built in the early 1900’s for the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads to have a grand entry to Seattle for the arriving train travelers. The 243 foot tower was the tallest structure in Seattle until nearly a decade later when Smith Tower was built. The Italianate architecture of the terminal’s tower was modeled after the campanile of the Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy. The terminal has been recently restored to its former grandeur.
It is free to roam the premises and admire the design and finish work of another era. The train station is a transportation hub with a number of Metro buses and the light rail stops nearby – but not actually in the station itself. This station is served by Amtrak Cascades, Empire Builder, and Coast Starlight trains, and by Sound Transit's Sounder commuter trains.
