Spokane County Courthouse -part of Heritage Walk
Spokane County Courtouse, Heritage Walk, W. A. Ritchie, sponsor
The Spokane County Courthouse closely resembles two 16th century chateaux, the Chateau de Chambord and Chateau d'Azay Le Rideau. French Renaissance design is obvious with its grand towers and beautiful craftsmanship in the iron and brickwork.
The architect was a 29-year-old named W. A. Ritchie. He was the winner of a design competition sponsored by The Board of County Commissioners. In spring of 1894, building began. It was finished and all officials moved in by November 20, 1895.
Designed to look like an old, romantic European castle, it is actually the place where the county's first public hanging took place.
The center tower is now lighted at night, and the entire building is considered a masterpiece.
