The Ritzville Public Library had its original cornerstone laid on June 4, 1907, with much fanfare, including Governor Albert Mead’s presence. The historic structure was built by contractor, Shontz S. Schuler, after the city received $10,500 from the Carnegie Foundation Fund. The new building housed the small free book collection that Daniel Buchanan had donated to the city on May 10, 1902. The building has always been a library, one of only four in Washington State that can claim that distinction. The library has always been a feature of the downtown renaissance architecture. During the early years, the basement served as the City Council Chambers and hosted other town meetings, including those of the Temperance Union. The library can be contacted at 509-659-1222,
