Shade Brewery - part of the Heritage Walk
Shade Brewery, Shade Tower, Heritage Walk, Bohemium Brewery, Golden Age Brewery, Atlantic Brewery, Lewir Stritesky, sponsor
The Schade Brewery, as it stands today, was constructed in four phases: ca. 1902, 1903, 1907 and 1934-37.
The building takes its name from Bernhardt Schade, the brewmaster, who had the building erected in 1903 on an oversized city block purchased from a Mr. Frost.
Schade hired the architect Lewis Stritesky, to design a facility based on drawings of a European brewery. Stritesky created a new western addition for the building begun by Frost. A bottling building and steam/pump house were also built. Initial production was 35,000 to 40,000 barrels a year.
In 1933 Golden Age Breweries Inc., bought the Schade Brewery. It was restored and upgraded to produce up to 200,000 barrels per year. In 1948 the operations were sold to Bohemian Brewing company, who later sold it to Atlantic Brewing company.
Now the building is mixed use.
