Photo op. Discoverers Monument is a very dramatic stone monument built in 1960 as a memorial to the great Portuguese explorers of the Age of Discovery. All of the most notable Portuguese explorers are featured, the most prominent being Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Henry the Navigator (Henry is the figure on the prow of the vessel). Interestingly, there is one woman included in the group of explorers, Queen Felipa of Lancaster, Henry the Navigator’s mother, who is generally credited with being the driving force behind Portugal’s bold exploration effort. The monument is in Belem across the highway from Jeronimos Monastery and can be reached via a tunnel that leads from the park in front of Jeronimos.
