These 340 acres of Fort Steilacoom Park offers the largest park in Lakewood and includes playfields, a playground, an off-leash dog park and 10 miles of hiking trails that wind through the park and around Waughop Lake. Once a military base and a farm, several of the barns remain along with two unusual silos built with black and red bricks that apparently date from 1931 – according to the faded lettering. Lakewood Historical Society & History Museum by VisitWa

Located in Lakewood's historic Colonial Center and opened in October, 2006, this local History Museum brings to life area history from its prehistoric past to the present time through displays of artifacts, photos, maps, documents, and memorabilia. The Lakewood Historical Society has packed a lot of history in this small space including a re-created pioneer cabin, a one-room schoolhouse and a post office of earlier times. South Puget Sound Urban Wildlife Interpretive Center by VisitWa

90-acre property that started as a game farm and fish hatchery in 1922, and it still operates today as a hatchery as well as an urban wildlife area. This center is managed by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. If hatchery staff are present they’ll often offer you an on-the-spot tour. The property is one of the last remnants of south Sound prairie ecosystem that once stretch across thousands of acres in the region. Although now surrounded by urban development, the property continues to support a variety of species that are adapted to open grassland habitats. Pierce College Planetarium by Thingstodo

Pierce College’s Science Dome, a simulated night-time experience in its 58-seat digital planetarium. Being the only one in the area, you’ll enjoy its 38-foot-wide, domed screen displaying the night sky. One of the staff typically dedicates 25 minutes of their presentation to explaining Doppler shifts, astronomical spectroscopy, and space telescopes. The presentation is illustrated by another staffer projecting on the dome planets, stars and the night sky. It’s a visual feast for the eyes.
