Visit an amazing exhibit, featuring over 80 artistically-detailed steel silhouettes depicting a typical campsite of the Corps of Discovery as they passed through our area on May 2, 1806. After having reached the Pacific in November of 1805, the Corp of Discovery was on its way home. Two nights before, they camped near the confluence of the Walla Walla and Columbia Rivers. The chief of the Walla Wallas was a unique leader named Yellepit. He told the Explorers about a good over-land trail that would save them many miles of dangerous up-river travel by way of the treacherous Snake River. That over-land trail brought them down what is now Main Street in Dayton to this site along the Patit Creek. This wonderful addition to Columbia County History was developed not only to commemorate the Bicentennial but to be enjoyed by future generations of historians, students and tourists.
