Boca do Inferno - (Photo Op)

Boca do Inferno - (Photo Op) by dshay

Located along the coast just a short walk from the center of Cascais is the Boca do Inferno (the Mouth of Hell). When the surf is right the ocean can pour through the narrow opening of the Boca and create an incredible spectacle. This is also a favorite place for surf fishermen. This is a great place for a sunset photo.

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption by dshay

This is the mother church of Cascais. It dates back to the 1600’s. It is worth a visit if for no other reason than to see the beautiful azulejos (Portuguese blue tiles). There is a beautiful park in front of the church which makes for a good rest stop while walking around Cascais.

Tamariz Beach on the Sun Coast

Tamariz Beach on the Sun Coast by dshay

One of the most pleasant things to do in Cascais most any time of the year is walk the “Paredao” (Promenade). The Paredao is a wide boardwalk that runs along the ocean between Cascais and Estoril. The total length is about 3.5 km. The Paredao is for pedestrians and cyclists only. There are lots of beautiful stops and wonderful beaches along the Paredao but one beach that is not to be missed is Tamariz. The coast line that runs between Cascais and Lisbon is called the Sun Coast and probably the heart of the Sun Coast is Tamariz. The beach is beautiful and the restaurants along this stretch of the Paredao are some of the best along the Sun Coast.

Stroll the Streets of Old Cascais-(Photo Op)

Stroll the Streets of Old Cascais-(Photo Op) by dshay

At its core Cascais is a fishing village that has been around for over 900 years. Over the years it has evolved into a major tourist destination as well as a very popular location for many Portuguese to maintain summer residences. But through it all Cascais has managed to retain its fishing village charm. Just wondering along its walking streets, along the seashore and through some of its back alleys can make for a very relaxing and rewarding day.

The Cultural Center of Cascais (Centro Cultural de Cascais) holds ongoing exhibitions of art & photography. The exhibitions feature internationally known artists as well as local talent. The venue is excellent and there is a first-rate cafe on site. The building is easy to spot. It is a bright pink building very near to the Citadela (old fort). The building was originally constructed in the 17th century and for years it was used as a monastery.
