Pioneer Square -Historic Tour of Fire and Gold

Pioneer Square -Historic Tour of Fire and Gold by YodioTours

Seattle's historic Pioneer Square is the original downtown Seattle. Initially the economy was the Yesler sawmill and shipping from the nearby docks. The young city was devastated by "The Great Seattle Fire of 1889" and the resulting “rebuild” of Seattle got a boost as Seattle became the jumping off port for the "Klondike Gold Rush". When the first ship from the Klondike landed with a load of gold in 1897, an economic boom began that established Seattle as a major city on the West Coast in just a few decades. Our tour visits many of the “gold-rush” buildings that still stand in Pioneer Square. For most people this is a 60 minute tour. It is a 12 block walking tour on level sidewalks that passes by the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. This tour is a fun way to see the best of the well-preserved and historic Pioneer Square. Start at: 101 Yesler Way Tour Length: 90 minutes Tour Type: Walking and friendly to wheel chairs and strollers

Pioneer Square - Boom town race for tallest building

Pioneer Square - Boom town race for tallest building by YodioTours

The "Great Fire of 1889" was the reset button for Pioneer Square was the commercial downtown of a booming Seattle more than a 100 years ago. The devastating "Great Fire of 1889" called for a restart of Seattle. A replacement Seattle had to be built quickly, and these conditions attracted investors and developers who pursued the bragging rights for owning the tallest building in Seattle. In this tour, we follow the contest from the first tall building at four stories to the winner that was a building so tall that it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi for 50 years. This tour begins at 101 Yesler Way across from Pioneer Park. It can be easily accessed from Pier 55 by riding the southbound #99 bus to 101 Yesler Way. The tour is 6 blocks of level and slight grade walking. Start at: 101 Yesler Way Tour Length: 30-40 Minutes Tour Type: Walking with two blocks of steep walking and the remaining blocks are fairly level.

Deadliest Tour by Captain Gary Covich

Deadliest Tour by Captain Gary Covich by YodioTours

The Deadliest Tour gives us a close-up view of Seattle’s home port for the fishing and crabbing vessels who fish the Bering Sea. The fleet includes several crab boats that are “stars” in the Discovery Channel’s popular show, “The Deadliest Catch”. Our guide for this Deadliest Tour is Captain Gary Covich, skipper of the Seattle-based crabbing vessel, Cascade Mariner. In this tour, Capt. Covich shares the back story for the Seattle’s crab fleet. We go where the crews of the crab boats spend time while in port. This driving and walking tour is an authentic Seattle experience that any fan of the Deadliest Catch will definitely enjoy. And even if you aren’t a fan of the show, you will find this tour a great introduction to the home of the fishing industry in Seattle. The tour begins next to the salt water of Puget Sound and you end at the freshwater Fisherman’s Terminal.
