World's Largest Frying Pan - PhotoOp

World's Largest Frying Pan - PhotoOp by VisitWa

This so-called "World's Largest Frying Pan" is actually a fiberglass recreation of the original cast iron behemoth that was used in the town's Clam Festival in 1941. As part of its initial display at the festival, a woman strapped bacon to her feet and hopped inside the pan carrying a giant spatula. After the clam celebration, the over-sized oddity reportedly traveled up and down the West Coast. Long Beach had a replica built to forever remember their part in its creation. The surface of the pan is over nine feet across and the tip of the handle is almost 15 feet off the ground.

World's Largest Totem Pole

World's Largest Totem Pole by VisitWa

The World’s LARGEST Totem Pole (from a single tree) is located in Port Kalama Park, Kalama, Washington. The four totem poles feature mythical forms, symbols and creatures of Pacific Northwest Native American culture. The poles were carved in the early 1960s by native American artist and craftsman, the late Chief Don Lelooska. The tallest pole, at 140', was carved from a 700 year-old Western Red Cedar. Easily visible for miles, the totem poles give a sense of long-ago Native American lore and tradition to the beaches and recreation areas along the modern scenic Columbia River. The Marine Park is a five acre day-use park that is bordered by a pedestrian/bicycle pathway along the Columbia River and also features playgrounds, covered picnic shelters - all within walking distance from the City of Kalama.

Peace Park

Peace Park by VisitWa

Only here and Hiroshima (Japan) will you find a statue of Sadako Sasaki, the 12 year old Japanese girl who died from exposure to the radiation of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Having been exposed to the radiation, within ten years Sadako exhibited symptoms of acute malignant lymph gland leukemia, common to children who were exposed to the atomic bomb blasts. During her treatment, she was told a legend that promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish. Sadako folded over a thousand cranes but died on the morning of October 25, 1955 at the age of 12. This is why, when you visit the statue, you will find that others have left hundreds of folded cranes on the statue. Be prepared to walk a distance if you are driving. There are benches to rest, and contemplate.

Wedgewood Rock - sketch by Seattle Times

Wedgewood Rock - sketch by Seattle Times by VisitWa

Wedgewood Rock, also called Big Rock, is a glacial erratic setting on the parking strip of this quiet neighborhood. Once used by Mountaineers & Boy Scouts for training: Wolf Bauer, Fred Beckey, Whittaker brothers, & REI founder Lloyd Anderson. In case you are tempted, the Seattle City Council passed an ordinance in 1970 making it a crime to climb the rock, punishable by a fine up to $100. But it makes a beautiful background for your travel snapshots.
