Only here and Hiroshima (Japan) will you find a statue of Sadako Sasaki, the 12 year old Japanese girl who died from exposure to the radiation of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Having been exposed to the radiation, within ten years Sadako exhibited symptoms of acute malignant lymph gland leukemia, common to children who were exposed to the atomic bomb blasts.
During her treatment, she was told a legend that promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish. Sadako folded over a thousand cranes but died on the morning of October 25, 1955 at the age of 12.
This is why, when you visit the statue, you will find that others have left hundreds of folded cranes on the statue.
Be prepared to walk a distance if you are driving. There are benches to rest, and contemplate.
