Santa Marta Lighthouse and Museum (Farol Museu de Santa Marta)

Santa Marta Lighthouse and Museum (Farol Museu de Santa Marta) by dshay

This beautiful lighthouse was first constructed in the 1700’s as part of the Portuguese coastal defense system. It was converted to an automated lighthouse in 1981. The building was rehabilitated in 2013 and is now open to the public. If you are a lighthouse buff his is a great museum. There is a 15-minute film that runs continuously about the lighthouses of Portugal, and Portugal has many amazingly picturesque lighthouses. There is a nominal admission charge. The museum is open from 10 AM (1000) to 5 PM (1700). It is closed on Monday’s. The lighthouse is located next to Casa Santa Marta.

Paula Rego Museum (Casa das Historias-Museu Paula Rego)

Paula Rego Museum (Casa das Historias-Museu Paula Rego) by dshay

There are many museums in Cascais but probably the most famous, and certainly the most controversial, is the Paula Rego Museum. Paula Rego is Portugal’s best known living artist. Her artistic style is unique and has been described as “cartoon like”. There is a permanent Paula Rego exhibit but there are also rotating exhibits as well. The controversy lies in the design of the structure. It is a very contemporary design that many locals believe is out of place in Cascais. It is worth checking out to form your own opinion. There is a cafe on site with a very nice outdoor eating area to take a break on a hot summer day. There is a nominal entrance fee. The museum is open from 10 AM (1000) to 6 PM (1800). It is closed on Monday’s.
