Black Sun, a sculpture and PhotoOp

Black Sun, a sculpture and PhotoOp by VisitWa

Black Sun is a 1969 sculpture by Isamu Noguchi located in Volunteer Park. The statue is situated on the eastern edge of the park's man-made reservoir, across from the Seattle Asian Art Museum. The view east from the sculpture features the Space Needle, Olympic Mountains, and Elliott Bay. This striking granite piece offers a very inviting PhotoOp during the day as well as at sunset. Many people like to shoot the Space Needle through the “donut hole” of the Black Sun. The Seattle music group, Soundgarden, had a hit song title “Black Hole Sun” named after this “Black Sun” Sculpture.

The Gum Wall -- a unique PhotoOp

The Gum Wall -- a unique PhotoOp by VisitWa

The famous Gum Wall is formally titled the Market Theater Gum Wall located on a brick alleyway wall now covered in used chewing gum. Parts of the wall are covered several inches thick, 15 feet high for 50 feet. Just a few steps from the flying salmon and Rachel the Pig are steps down one level to the Gum Wall. This is one of several ways to get to the Gum Wall. The wall is in Post Alley by the box office for the Market Theater, and the tradition began around 1993 when patrons of Seattle Theatresports stuck gum to the wall and placed coins in the gum blobs before entering the theater. The Gum Wall was named one of the top 5 germiest tourist attractions in 2009, second to the Blarney Stone in Ireland. It is a popular site with wedding photographers, and an active sight of selfies being taken. This is a truly unique PhotoOp for Seattle visitors. For those seeking a celebrity factor, a scene for the 2009 Jennifer Aniston film Love Happens was shot at the wall in 2008.

Rotary Fountain - part of the Sculpture Walk

Rotary Fountain - part of the Sculpture Walk by VisitWa

The Rotary Riverfront Fountain and plaza make up the Howard street entrance to Riverfront Park. The fountain was officially dedicated "to the people of Spokane" in 2005. A 30 foot diameter ring is held up by 5 stainless steel columns. In the warmer seasons, jets spray towards the middle of the fountain creating a beautiful dome of waterfalls while other jets shoot water upwards, some provide mist, and a few spray sideways. In all, 40 jets create a delightful, dynamic waterscape. Keeping in mind the environmental theme of Expo' 74, the artists designed the fountain to conserve water by a filtration and recirculation process. The fountain's sculptures were designed by Harold Balazs and Bob Perron. posted by Nadine S., Spokane's Homegrown Tourist
