The Lisbon Story Center was only recently opened and it is one of the most innovative museums in Lisbon. Depicted in exhibits and multi-media presentations the visitor moves from room to room to literally walk through the history of Lisbon. There is even a reenactment of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 complete with all of the thunder associated with an earthquake. The Lisbon Story Center is located in Terreiro do Paco very near the Rua Augusta arch. The Lisbon Story Center is open every day from 10 AM (1000) to 8 PM (2000).

Museu do Design e la Moda (Design Museum) by dshay

Museu do Design e la Moda, or MuDe, which means change in Portuguese, is considered by critics to be one of the best museums of modern design in the world. The museum houses over 1200 articles of fashion designed by some of the most famous fashion designers in the world. The museum is conveniently located on Rua Augusta, the main walking street of downtown Lisbon. As with other Lisbon museums there is a small entry fee and entry is free on Sunday’s until 1400 and it is closed on Monday’s. Open Sun, Tue-Thurs from 10 AM (1000) to 6 PM (1800) and to 8 PM (2000) on Fri and Sat.

Oceanarium (Oceanario de Lisboa) by dshay

Located in Parque dos Nacoes (Park of the Nations) The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of the largest in the world. Its design is modernistic and unique. There are over 25,000 species of fish, plants and sea animals in residence. The structure appears to rise out of the Tagus River. There are rotating exhibits and the focus of the exhibits is often about how our world is changing both in the oceans and on land. This is a must see for any family visiting Lisbon. Unlike other museums in Lisbon the Oceanarium is not closed on Monday’s and entry is not free on Sunday mornings. Open 10 AM (1000) to 8 PM (2000) in the summer and until 7 PM (1900) in the winter.

Maritime Museum (Museu do Marinha) by dshay

Located next to the Monastery Jeronimos, the Maritime Museum is one of the most important maritime museums in Europe. With over 17,000 items on display, it highlights the eras when Portugal dominated the seas. There are replicas of many of Portugal’s most famous expedition ships and there are also replicas of some of Portugal’s most elaborate ceremonial barges. There is an entry fee but as with other museums in Lisbon entry is free on Sunday’s until 1400. It is open from 10 AM (1000) to 6 PM (1800) Tue-Sun. The museum is closed on Monday’s.

Museum of Coaches (Museu Nacional dos Coches) by dshay

The Museum of Coaches is one of Lisbon’s most visited sites and for good reason. It houses a superb collection of horse drawn carriages built for royal events starting around 1700 and up until the introduction of the automobile. Each coach is a work of art reflecting each designer’s personal style along with the perceived personality of the intended occupants. There is a small fee to enter the museum and, as with other museums in Lisbon, entry is free on Sunday’s until 2 PM (1400). It is open from 10 AM (1000) to 6 PM (1800) Tue-Sun and it is closed on Monday’s.

Modern Art Museum by dshay

Located on the grounds of the Gulbenkian Museum the Museum of Modern Art is Lisbon’s premier modern art museum. The museum features works of 20th century British and Portuguese artists plus a rotating exhibit of modern art from other parts of the world. You can purchase a joint ticket for admittance to both the Modern Art Museum as well as the Gulbenkian Museum. There are excellent cafes located at both museums and there is a cafe located in the center of the park that houses both museums. The museum is open from 10 AM (1000) to 545 PM (1745) and closed on Tuesday’s. Admission if free on Sunday’s until 1400.

Gulbenkian Museum by dshay

The Gulbenkian Museum is considered to be one of the top museums in the world. It houses a magnificent collection of Egyptian, Roman, Greek, Islamic, Asian and European art. The Gulbenkian Museum was created by Armenian oil mogul Calouste Gulbenkian. Mr. Gulbenkian viewed Portugal as his adopted home and used much of his fortune to create a foundation to promote arts in Lisbon. The foundation supports this and other museums as well as a symphony orchestra and various music and dance programs. The Gulbenkian Museum is a “must” on any visit to Lisbon.
