Seattle Times - Printing Plant Tours

Seattle Times - Printing Plant Tours by VisitWa

Tours of the North Creek printing facility in Bothell are conducted by appointment only. We do not offer tours at our other facilities. North Creek tours take approximately one hour and our scheduling fluctuates according to the season, for example the school year. Tour scheduling is also based on production schedules, and when the presses are running. We can accommodate tours of up to 35 people at a time. For safety reasons, the minimum age is eight. The tour includes following the newspapers "hot off the press" through our packaging center and out the door to the trucks. One of the most popular parts of the tour is watching the robots pick up enormous rolls of newsprint and move them to the press. To schedule a tour, call 425/489-7000 or e-mail Kate Palmer at kpalmer@seattletimes.com.

Univ. of Puget Sound - Chihuly Glass - PhotoOp

Univ. of Puget Sound - Chihuly Glass - PhotoOp by VisitWa

You will enjoy your visit Wyatt Hall. The building features a 2-story window displaying glass art by Dale Chihuly. The window represents the ivy leaves covering the campus buildings. The art is best viewed from the foyer of the building looking through the glass to outside. In the setting sun, this art is an outstanding photo op. Chihuly, a native of Tacoma, attended Puget Sound as well as multiple other schools. He has been generous in his support of UPS. Wyatt Hall is a fairly new academic building on campus, dedicated in 2003. It houses the English, History, Foreign Languages & Literature, Politics & Government, Philosophy, Honors, Science Technology & Society, Classics, and Religion departments. Many of the classrooms in the building are seminar style, meaning a circle of tables that students sit at to encourage discussion between students and the professor, rather than a lecture.

CHIHULY Bridge of Glass - Venetian Wall - PhotoOp

CHIHULY Bridge of Glass - Venetian Wall - PhotoOp by VisitWa

On the east end of the Glass Bridge nearest the Glass Museum is the Venetian Wall, an eighty-foot installation displaying 109 sculptures from three of Dale Chihuly's internationally recognized series: Venetians, Ikebana, and Putti. The Venetians are described as being exuberant sculptures with origins in Venetian Art Deco glass. On the other hand, the Ikebana are described as quiet pieces, created in the spirit of traditional Japanese floral arrangements. Putti were popular figures in European art of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and represent Cupid, the Roman god of love. The Venetian Wall is a collection of some of the largest blown-glass works executed in the history of the medium.

CHIHULY Bridge of Glass - Crystal Towers

CHIHULY Bridge of Glass - Crystal Towers by VisitWa

Mid-point on the Glass Bridge are the Crystal Towers, an installation rising 40 feet above the bridge. Another work by hometown artist, Dale Chihuly, the towers are illuminated from below, the forms glow at night to serve as beacons of light for the bridge and Tacoma. The 63 large crystals in each tower are made from Polyvitro, a polyurethane material developed to withstand the elements. The Crystal Tower’s design elements have been described as “raw, brutal forms, monumental and bold, that appear as if cut from mountain peaks or taken from frozen alpine lakes”.

CHIHULY Bridge of Glass - Seaform Pavilion--PhotoOp

CHIHULY Bridge of Glass - Seaform Pavilion--PhotoOp by VisitWa

The Chihuly Bridge of Glass is a 500-foot-long pedestrian overpass linking Pacific Ave to the Museum of Glass. Austin-based Arthur Andersson, architect of the Washington State History Museum, designed the bridge in close collaboration with internationally-renowned Studio Glass pioneer Dale Chihuly. Three distinct installations comprise the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. Leaving Pacific Ave the first is the Seaform Pavilion, a ceiling made of 2,364 objects from Chihuly's Seaform and Persian series. Placed on top of a fifty-by-twenty-foot plate-glass ceiling, the forms are suspended in midair and make dramatic use of natural light. This is a popular PhotoOp for many viewers. When the lighting is optimum, it is a brilliant photo and a memorable viewing experience.

Richland Riverfront Trail - north end

Richland Riverfront Trail - north end by VisitWa

The USS Triton Submarine Memorial Park is the north end of the Richland Riverfront Trail which offers 7 miles of scenic paved trail running along the banks of the Columbia River south to the Columbia Point Marina Park (just west of I-82). It’s a surprise to see the sail of a submarine sticking out the gravel on the bluff. Right above the park is the Hanford 300 Area. From the park the trail sweeps down to the river and along the bank. Just below is a handsome overlook shelter. There are great old trees along the way to provide a shady escape from the heat, a few different parks and playgrounds.
