Aquario Vasco de Gama

Aquario Vasco de Gama by dshay

The aquarium, not to be confused with the much larger oceanarium located in Park of the Nations, is a small but quite interesting aquarium that first opened in 1898. It is located just west of Lisbon along the river in Alges. There is a Alges stop on the Cascais rail line. The aquarium has some excellent exhibits and is well worth a visit. With its small size you can easily visit the aquarium in 1-2 hours. Open 10 AM (1000) to 6 PM (1800) daily.

Castelo dos Mouros (Castle of the Moors) (Photo Op)

Castelo dos Mouros (Castle of the Moors) (Photo Op) by dshay

Located next to Pena Palace, the Castle of the Moors is generally visited in conjunction with a visit to Pena. It was constructed by the Moors in the 8th and 9th centuries when the occupied much of Portugal. The castle was built as a hill top fortress and most of the original walls remain today. The views from the castle are excellent and it is a great place for kids and adults alike to feel like they are kings of a medieval fortress. The same bus that makes the circuit to Pena from Sintra also stops at the castle. There is a short but steep trail leading from Sintra’s Old Town to the castle. Open daily from 930 AM (0930) to 8 PM (2000).

Convento dos Capuchos (Photo Op)

Convento dos Capuchos (Photo Op) by dshay

The convent, which was constructed in the 1500’s sit high in the hills outside of Sintra. The average visitor to Sintra doesn’t get to the Convent because there is no public transportation. That is a shame because it is probably one of the most interesting sites to visit in Sintra. The convent consists of a number of small cells, framed by giant boulders and lined with cork for insulation, and connected by narrow, cave-like passages. This is a place that encourages kids imaginations to run wild! To get to the convent take the road out of Sintra toward Monserrate and go about 2 km past Monserrate and follow the signs. It is 7 km from Sintra to the convent. Open daily from 930 AM (0930) to 8 PM (2000).

Palacio de Monserrate (Monserrate Palace) (Photo Op)

Palacio de Monserrate (Monserrate Palace) (Photo Op) by dshay

Monserrate is one of the most iconic sites to visit in Sintra. It is located approximately 3 km from the city center and there is a bus that goes to the park regularly. Monserrate has had many uses and many owners dating back several centuries but it was an English millionaire that bought the property and turned it into what it is today. He purchased the property in 1856 and immediately replaced the main building with a Moorish style palace. The palace is a beautiful structure in a picturesque setting but the real attraction of Monserrate is the botanical garden that was created by Cook. So a visit to Monserrate isn’t just a visit to a fine palace but instead a walk through an exceptional garden. There is a music room in the palace that is host to musical events throughout the year. If you happen to be lucky enough to be at Monserrate when an event is being held it is worth attending. Open daily from 930 AM (0930) to 7 PM (1900).

Take the Train to Sintra

Take the Train to Sintra by dshay

You will find a number of specific entries on this app about places to visit in Sintra but just the town itself is worth a visit even if you never venture into any of its many attractions. Sintra is situated in the hills northwest of Lisbon. For centuries it has been THE place to go for royalty and wealthy Lisboans to escape the summer heat. The compact, hilly town features some wonderful old villas, narrow, winding streets with unique shops and wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and the sea. It has been described as fairytale town. It is top on most lists of place to see for visitors to the Lisbon area. Parking is not plentiful so best to take the train from Lisbon which leaves from Rossio Station several times each hour. Sintra has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Quinta da Regaleira (Photo Op)

Quinta da Regaleira (Photo Op) by dshay

Quinta da Regaleira was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century by a wealthy Brazilian who had quite an imagination. He hired an equally imaginative Italian architect and together they created one of the most creative and playful properties to be found anywhere. While the palace is certainly worth a visit it is the park that surrounds the palace that is the main attraction. With grottos, lakes, caves, tunnels, and initiation wells, there is something to excite everyone in the family of most any age. This is probably the most visited attraction in Sintra and for good reason. It is easily accessible via a short walk from Sintra’s historic center. Open 10 AM (1000) to 8 PM (2000).

Palacio Nacional da Sintra (National Palace of Sintra) (Photo Op by dshay

Located in the heart of Sintra, the National Palace is the best preserved medieval palace in Portugal. It was inhabited almost continuously from the 15th through the 19th centuries. Today it functions as one of the most important museums in Portugal. One of the things that makes the National Palace unique is its blend of Manueline and Moorish architecture. Construction commenced during the time that the Moors controlled a good share of Portugal and was completed after the Portuguese monarchy reclaimed the territory. The castle is one of the most easily accessible attractions in Sintra because it literally sits in the heart of Old Town Sintra. Open from 930 AM (0930) to 7 PM (1900) daily.

Palacio da Pena (Pena Palace)-Sintra (Photo Op)

Palacio da Pena (Pena Palace)-Sintra (Photo Op) by dshay

Pena Palace is arguably the most photographed and most visited of all of Portugal’s attractions. Its fairytale appearance has made it the hallmark of Portuguese travel posters for decades. The palace was built by King Ferdinand and was started in 1838. It took about 15 years to complete. To label it as a fairytale palace is an apt description. The palace has a variety of stylistic elements and is painted in a bright mosaic of contrasting colors. The grounds that surround the palace are worth a trip in and of themselves. The palace is on top of a mountain and it is a steep walk from Sintra. There is a bus that runs regularly from the center of Sintra. It is worth considering getting off the bus at the entrance to the gardens, which is below the palace, and walk through the gardens and then uphill to the palace. Pena is open every day with the exception of major holidays. Opens at 945 AM (0945) and closes at 7 PM (1900).

Ajuda Palace (Palacio da Ajuda)

Ajuda Palace (Palacio da Ajuda) by dshay

If you only have time to visit one palace on your trip to Lisbon this is probably the one to visit. It is the most elegant and well preserved palace in greater Lisbon. The palace is filled with tapestries, furniture, art and decorative pieces all reflective of the enormous wealth that accrued to Portuguese royalty during the 1700’s as a result of Portugal’s colonization of Brazil. The palace is in Belem uphill from the Jeronimos Monastery. If you are visiting Jeronimos you can catch Tram 18 or just walk from Jeronimos. The palace is open from 10 AM (1000) to 5 PM (1700) and is closed on Wednesday’s.

National Tile Museum (Museu do Azulejo)

National Tile Museum (Museu do Azulejo) by dshay

Hand painting individual tiles to create a mosaic is a tradition that goes back centuries in Portugal. The tiles, generally but not necessarily, are blue and white and are called Azulejos and this museum has the largest collection in existence. The mosaics can be quite large and depict very complex scenes. The ability to paint individual tiles and be able to weave them together to tell a story is a very unique art form. This museum is a bit out of the way relative to central Lisbon but it is well worth visiting. Like most museums in Lisbon it is closed on Monday’s but in addition it is closed on Tuesday’s until 1400. From Wed thru Sun it is open from 10 AM (1000) to 6 PM (1800).
